New Atlantic Ballet program aims to give young Indigenous dancers professional boost

Atlantic Ballet of Canada is expanding its Indigenous programing with the help of a $400,000 grant from the federal government. Nipahtuwet Naka Wespahtuwet Possesom Paul, director of Atlantic Ballet Indigenous, said the new program is called Intercultural Indigenous Dance and it’s aimed at Indigenous high school students. Fun Facts About Me!

I’ve lived in Fredericton for the past six or so years now, where I’ve spent my time getting to know the growing community. My first four years here were spent getting my degree in journalism from St. Thomas University. (I also studied communications and fine arts!)

In 2022, I started an internship at CBC News where I met some amazing friends. That summer was one for the books.

I live with my cat Vesta. I adopted her after I finished university and she’s around four-years-old. She loves to get dressed up and lounge in the sun on my balcony. Talk about a girl’s best friend!

I grew up doing musical theatre on my home island of Cape Breton, N.S. and still love it to this day. I am always excited when I can find a way to intersect my two passions and explore New Brunswick’s vibrant arts community in my reporting.

When I’m not working, I love taking in live music and traveling. I didn’t see much of Canada when I was young so I’ve been working my way through my must-see spots as a young adult.

I spent much of my time as a pre-teen/teen volunteering in my community. I started a non-profit at 10-years-old that would raise money for charities of all kind, which I ran for around six years. In 2016, I got sick and was eventually diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called lupus. While I couldn’t volunteer as much as I used to, I tried my best to spread awareness about the disease, which is often not diagnosed until later in life.
